OVERVIEW: The port of Murmansk consists of two harbours: the Barents
Commercial Seaport and the Fishing Port. The port area occupies nearly all
southern elbow-shaped bend of the Gulf of Kolsky.
LOCATION: Murmansk is situated at the eastern coast of the southern
elbow-shaped bend of the Gulf of Kolsky, between the latitude of Mishukov
Point in the north and Lat. 68 55' 33" N in the south. It is the last unfrozen
port of the northern seas route.
In very severe winters the southern and middle elbow-shaped bends of
the Gulf are frozen over for a short period of time in February or March,
during calm and frosty weather. In mild winters drift ice is observed. The
northern part of the Gulf never freezes over. The port of Murmansk is open
for navigation all the year round. In the event of ice conditions in the Gulf of
Kolsky, ice-breaker assistance will be effected in compliance with the Harbour
regulations in force.
